[Canberra, ACT]

Interchange General Practice was founded in 1980 and is located in the centre of Canberra, on the third floor of 28 University Avenue.

It offers a full range of medical diagnostic, treatment and referral services for men, women and children. In consultations, doctors give patients as much time as they need.

The Practice also provides a range of specialised services including sexual health care and screening, HIV testing and HIV/AIDS management, drug and alcohol management, hepatitis C testing and management, psychological and life style counselling. Three of the Practice’s doctors are authorized to prescribe S100 drugs for HIV treatment. The Practice is the location of a HIV/AIDS nurse employed by the ACT Division of General Practice.

The Practice is equipped with a treatment room where it provides inoculations, manages wound dressings, collects pathology samples and carries out minor surgical procedures, including excision of moles and suturing.

The Practice has an electrocardiogram (ECG) machine which measures and
records the electrical activity of the heart. It also has a spirometer which is used to test for lung function and can help to diagnose diseases such as asthma and emphysema.

Interchange General Practice encourages patients to develop a relationship with a specific doctor since continuity of treatment is essential to effective patient care. In
consultations, doctors give patients as much time as they need to deal with the matters that are of concern to them.

Interchange General Practice has always extended an outreach to the disadvantaged and those whose lives fall outside the mainstream and offers compassionate, non judgemental treatment. The philosophy of the practice is to offer health care which attends not only to the patient’s medical problems but also the psycho-social issues which may impact on them.
